Using unique vitreal and vitreous paints on glass provides a vibrantly beautiful display that catches the eye. This unique paint is created by fusing powdered glass to a substrate by firing at very high temperatures. The powdered glass melts, flows, and then hardens to a smooth, durable vitreous coating. The word comes from the Latinvitreum, meaning "glassy."
Artist Dick Dunmire creates his unique works by first drawing and painting a watercolor "template" which becomes his source for first laying a leaded outline then painting with his vitreal paints. The piece is then baked to set the colors, creating a stained glass appearance.
